Remuera Physiotherapy

The transformation of the health centre at 437 Remuera Road coincides with my developing vision of healthcare, and more specifically my vision for how we can move freely throughout our lives without pain.  I have been working at this clinic since 1989, and it has become increasingly obvious that clients expect more from life but their bodies are letting them down.  Chronic pain and injury takes its toll.  It leads to stress, possibly depression and a sense of “bloody hell am I always going to be this stiff and sore”.

The answer to this is no, but to achieve painfree movement you will need to change your perception of how your body works and what is needed to keep your body moving well.  It will also need a change in how you use the health system and your various health practitioners.  You will need to stop imagining the worst (i.e. that parts of your body are arthritic and crumbling) and know that your body is designed to get you through life with full mobility and in a painfree state.  Arthritis is part of the aging process just as much as wrinkles or grey hair.  Our bodies can cope as long as the setup is close to what it is designed for.

You need to have regular checkups to ensure there is no disease process beginning in your body.  Once this is established, work your body for an hour every day, the intensity determined by your stage in life.  We are healthier if we move, and move from a position that our body is designed to move from.  The next step is ensuring that the way we move is correct.

Our job as physiotherapists at Remuera Physiotherapy is to look at your body and put it through some specific muscle and joint tests.  We need to find out what is stopping your ability to move correctly, explain what we have found to you, and teach you how to get your posture and movement patterns back closer to what your body was designed for.  Our training and experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and Egoscue has led us to where we are now, more of kinetic biomechanists.  We teach people who have pain, or who have lost the ability to move correctly, how to reverse the process and enjoy movement again.

We can only work with you.  We will listen to the issues you are having, make sense of what is happening, and do our utmost to ensure you understand why your body is sending you the pain messages and why you are losing the ability to move.  The next step is easy and will be achieved mainly by yourself through exercise and moving more.  We will keep testing the joints of your body that are tight, muscles that were found to be weak and monitor your level of symptoms.  At times we may treat your symptoms with acupuncture, manipulation, mobilisation or massage, but that will only be to help you exercise more efficiently.  We will try to take your reliance away from a health professional to be able to depend on yourself.

Mathew Syed in his fantastic book Bounce talks about needing 10,000 hours of purposeful practise to become an expert at what you do.  I have done my 10,000 hours and some, so believe I am an expert at what I do.  My combination of Egoscue, musculoskeletal physiotherapy and experience from seeing thousands of clients, makes what I can offer you unique in our health system.  I want to help you move better throughout your life.
